Recently I've discovered the wonderful world of high resolution texture packs for N64 emulation programs. Basically what they do is replace the old crusty texture files with new shiny ones. While I love the crusty old textures, it's nice to see some of my old favorites with a new look. And after talking about some of these games I really want to go back and play through them again and this is a great way to inspire me to do that. While only a handful of games have a decent texture pack, the ones that do look great. Here are some photos to give you an idea of what they look like.
Both Zelda games have been re-textured, but these are all OOT.
Here is Mario Kart. The characters themselves haven't been re-textured because of the sicking amount of images for each one.
Mario 64.
A different more classic looking Mario.
Paper Mario.
Banjo-Kazooie.
And probably my favorite looking one
Perfect Dark. This one looks fantastic.
With games that look this fancy, I have to play with my pinky extended. If this is something you would be interested in
here is a link to an excellent forum post with a definitive list of each game with each pack. Please don't ask me for installation instructions, that's what Google is for.
Playing N64 games at their maximum capacity - i.e no fog, high resoultions, and FPS is so much better. Something I disliked about Goldeneye and PD is the framerate would drop so rapdily sometimes, especially in Multiplayer.
ReplyDeleteThe xbox live PD64 version was the way the game was originally intended to play. 60 FPS, high res textures, smoother controls.
Stuff like this brings a tear to my eye, I really like the look of the Mario 64 screens, gonna check this out.
Wow, what a different !
ReplyDeleteI wanted to try this some time ago but my PC's specs were too low...
ReplyDeleteI want hq zelda!!!!
ReplyDeletePerfect Dark's light-effects doesn't really catch up with the upgraded textures, but still looking great!
ReplyDeleteOOT Hyrule field upgraded textures looks cool aswell.
I can definitely tell the difference pretty easily, does this only work for the emulators or is there a way you can upgrade the firmware on an actual N64?
ReplyDeleteYeah, it looks nice.
ReplyDeleteWow...really, wow! it's kinda weird to see some old games on high resolution.
ReplyDeleteAaron M. Gipson- It's emulators only. Even if you could hack the cartridges there isn't enough memory to handle the high res textures.
ReplyDeleteNo way!! That's unreal. Might get me to finally try some of these old games.
ReplyDeleteI love when I see individual develpers working hard to remake old games like this
I remember I first saw this when someone did a cell shaded Ocarina of Time. Looked amazing!
ReplyDeletewow i always thought taht games were just designed that way.
ReplyDeleteHo-Ly Shit. You, sir, has just made my week. Thank you thank you! Following your blog for sure.
ReplyDeleteWho plays N64 at this time ?
ReplyDeleteWow! That looks awesome. I am always afraid of going back and playing my old games because I think the crappy graphics will ruin it, but this could make it better.
ReplyDeletei want to know how long it takes to retexture a game. it has to be over 100 hours.
ReplyDeleteOh the memories! Followed!
